Hampton Roads, Virginia Welder's Program

Welding offers many opportunities for individuals who enjoy working with their hands, machines, and metals. Industry uses welding to make automobiles, ships, home appliances, bridges, buildings, and other structures. Individuals can acquire jobs as arc welders, gas welders, brazers, and burners.

Shipyards in Hampton Roads hire welders for ship maintenance and repair. Many other industries in the Tidewater area also use welders for construction but Hampton Roads is unique with its large ports and Navy shipyards. Welding requires constant training since more advanced techniques are used on specialized material such as that used in the Navy.

Additionally, opportunities are available to progress to supervisors, superintendents, and business owners. New welding processes and methods are opening new career areas in electron beams, lasers, and ultrasonic wave applications, which require highly technical equipment and skills.

School Purpose and Objective

The purpose of this program is to prepare students with entry-level skills for employment as welders, flame cutters, and shipfitters. The objectives of the welding program are to provide classroom instruction in welding theory, shop prints and sketches. Hands-on training in welding and flame cutting are included with proper training in safety procedures and practices to protect the individual, fellow worker and equipment.

School Accreditation and Certifications

Tidewater Tech Trades is a vocational school accredited by the Council of Occupational Education (COE) to operate in Hampton Roads, Virginia.
